Quirky Logo Puppy Linux founder Barry Kauler has announced the release of version 1.4 of Quirky. The Quirky Linux distribution is a platform for trying out new, "quirky ideas" and is in the same family as Puppy Linux, but its creator points out that it's a "distinct distro in its own right."

In a post on his blog, Kauler says, "The main purpose of releasing Quirky 1.4 is to test my experimental simplified module loading and interface configuration boot scripts (codename 'zzz')". The overall aim is to improve the detection and set-up of sound, as well as analogue and 3G modems.

Built using the same Woof build system as Puppy Linux, Quirky 1.4 features the 2.6.31.14 Linux kernel and is built from the Wary5 PET packages, which include X.org 7.3. Kauler notes that several new features in Woof debut for testing in the release, "In particular, a "heavy duty" file downloader back end for the Puppy Package Manager and a Video Upgrade Wizard (for now), which should fix any problems with downloading packages".

Further information about the release can be found in the release notes. Quirky 1.4 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors as a 124 MB ISO image file. At the time of writing the Puppy Linux download page still showed version 1.3 of Quickly as the latest release.
