Scientists: Alaskan volcano ready to erupt

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Mount Redoubt in Alaska has been showing signs of increased activity that could mean the volcano may soon erupt, scientists said Friday.

Research geophysicist Peter Cervelli of the Alaska Volcano Observatory said scientists suspect if Mount Redoubt does erupt, the event could potentially take place within hours, CNN reported.

"I would not be surprised to see it erupt at anytime," Cervelli said. "We're going to know it when we see it."

The observatory, which increased Mount Redoubt's status to "watch" level last Sunday, said the volcano's activity is more energetic than the previous several days. "However, it is still less vigorous than that observed last weekend," officials said.

An information statement released by the observatory Friday said the 10,197-foot peak was on Volcano Alert Level Watch along with being on Aviation Color Code Orange.

The observatory said during the last eight hours, seismic activity at the volcano has increased noticeably.
