Hi guys! I'm Molly Ren--you might remember me from KFADC2, which I helped put together with my friend Nic. Now me and the College Park Kinklings are trying to put together a 3rd KinkForAll!

The KFADC3 Wiki Page

Right now, we have one big problem: we don't have a location. Finding a cheap/free place with two conference rooms in Washington DC is pretty hard. Previously, we used the DC LGBT Center, but now they're only renting one room to a group. We used a space in Rockville for KFADC1, but that was in Maryland! I'm checking out libraries and colleges, but if anyone else has a lead, let me know.

Hi Molly,

I can look into George Mason. I'm a student there, and might be able to get the rooms for free.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

I can look into University of Maryland College Park, but again, it's in Maryland (though easily accessible on the Metro). If a location inside the District isn't workable, I might be able to get student group rates if I'm clever, and I'll look into free options on campus as well.

The deal with using classrooms at University of Maryland is, we'd have to be sponsored by a student group. I'm hearing that classrooms are free, but rooms in the Student Union are not, and I'll need to see if there are other fees for using the projectors and for inviting 'outside people' (i.e. not students or faculty) to the event - if I can, I'll figure this out later today. For the student group, I'll ask Pride Alliance if they'd be interested in helping us out.

Once I have full info, we'd have to know this week if we want to use the space, so I'll get working on answering these questions as quickly as possible.

For the larger question, what do we all think of having another KFADC outside of the District? And what's the status of George Mason? How metro-accessible is GMU - if we're talking about the Fairfax campus, the site says there's a CUE bus from the metro?

I'm in process with contacting GMU. It appears they have essentially the same policies as GMU -- rooms are free to student organizations, but there is (somewhat) extensive fees for outside organizations. More details and room prices here: http://studentcenters.gmu.edu/services.html

I was wondering...can we create a student organization or be sponsored by an extant student org? I think Women's Studies and the LGBTQ Center would be interested. Should we contact them or their UMD equivilants? Or perhaps another progressive organization?

Thoughts?

RE: Metro accessibility, it's about a 15-20 minute ride from the Vienna Station off the Orange Line via CUE (City of Fairfax) Bus. Fair is $1.70, or free if you have a valid ID from GMU.

If we have this event on a Saturday, parking shouldn't be a problem at a GMU parking garage. Fees are no more than $12 for all day parking.

That's not *too* dissimilar from Maryland's accessibility - about a 10 minute ride from the College Park station off the Green Line via UMD shuttle. Student ID isn't required on the bus to and from the metro station.

However, upon seeking more details for reserving rooms at Maryland, I've learned that we can't reserve classrooms beyond four hours, and that April 30th is Maryland Day (a school-wide open house festival sort of deal), so the Student Union will be entirely unavailable for reservations. That may mean that I (and likely some other College Park Kinklings) may have conflicts that day - I missed it when I scanned academic calendars for conflicts.

Anyway, assuming we go with April 30th, UMD won't work as a venue.

A few thoughts:

April 30th is much too soon without even a tentative venue. I
recommend picking a date in something like July or September; there
are pros and cons to a summer date. I think September is the earliest
to get the advantage of students being back.

I recall all of the schools I contacted having similar policies: cheap
usage for student groups and conference services for outsiders. I'd
expect departments to have better access to classroom space, but I'm
not actually sure.

Wherever you end up, make sure you ask about whether you need to get
event insurance.

Yeah. What Nikolas said.

This is not always necessary at universities *if* we can get a sponsoring organizing from within the University. Queer/Gay-Straight Alliances are really helpful in this regard. In Boston, the Women's Resource Center, a similar university-affiliated group, was outstanding for this very reason (among others too numerous to mention).[0]

I say go for it. KFADC1 was held in Rockland (although ultimately not without bureaucrats twisting our arms about it).[1]

Obviously, I think for "KinkForAll Washington, DC" somewhere central in DC proper would be better, but as long as you've got a venue that works for KinkForAll,[2] I would encourage going with whatever's available.

Another option is to just call it something else: maybe it's time for the first KinkForAll Maryland?

If someone (you?) *can* create a student organization that would sponsor KFADC3, maybe because you've got university affiliations, go for it. That seems like a very effective application of do-ocracy.[3]

If not, and if the best venue options seem to be university classrooms, then getting an existing student organization to sponsor has historically been the most effective option. Most KinkForAll unconferences were put on this way, including both in Providence,[4][5] thanks to the membership of Brown University's Sexual Health, Education and Empowerment Council.[6]

Of course, other venue options like LGBT centers or public facilities like government buildings, libraries, and so on may also be good options to look into that don't have to be sponsored by student groups. That's how both KinkForAll unconferences in New York City[7][8] and the one in San Francisco happened,[9] for instance.
