500,000 Android device activations per day

According to a recent tweet by Andy Rubin, Senior VP of Mobile at Google and Android founder, there are currently over 500,000 Android devices activated every day. Not only that, but this figure is growing week over week at a rate of 4.4%. Back in December 2010 this number stood at just 300,000 per day, and before that 200,000 per day in August 2010.

This number is, of course, great news for Google and the Android platform. With such a large number of activations per day, it really shows how popular the mobile operating system is around the globe, and how much demand there is for Android devices overall. Not only is this number high, but it’s also a more true representation of consumer activity as it directly relates to users purchasing (and activating) their devices, as opposed to numbers referring to shipments (to retailers), as companies often provide.

As Android Central points out, this huge number does equate to nearly six devices getting activated every secondand around twenty thousand per hour. What’s more impressive is the rate of growth, which using the 4.4% mark as a statical growth rate, will place the one million activations per day mark around September of this year. Hopefully device manufacturers can push out their devices fast enough to meet the increasing demand.
