A former Clinton police officer has admitted accessing confidential e-mail accounts.

Dean Livingston, 44, pleaded guilty as charged on Thursday to one count of third-degree felony computer crimes.

Livingston faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Oct. 7 by 3rd District Judge Thomas Kay.

Court documents accuse Livingston of accessing the e-mail accounts on Nov. 1. At that time, Livingston was still on the police force, but court documents do not give additional details about the crimes.

Livingston was a Clinton police officer from October 1992 to December 2009, when he retired following accusations of misconduct.

According to a synopsis from the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council prepared in March, the Clinton Police Department received a complaint that Livingston was having an affair with a married woman and would drive to her home in his unmarked police car. Livingston contended there was no sex, but later admitted to hugging and kissing the woman, the synopsis says. It makes no mention of e-mails.

Deputy Davis County Attorney David Cole did not immediately return a phone call.
