Atlantis Computing, a Mountain View startup that specializes in “virtual desktop infrastructure,” has closed third-round funding totaling $10 million from Cisco Systems and other investors, the company announced Wednesday.

“Virtualization,” a technology pioneered by VMware, dramatically increases computing power on servers and has been a critical element in the explosive growth of the Internet-based cloud computing industry.

“Desktop virtualization is one of the fastest-growing technology sectors and has the potential to be even larger than server virtualization,” said Nicolas El Baze of Partech International, which joined with Cisco and El Dorado Ventures in the round.

Atlantis says its storage and performance optimization technologies integrate with systems proffered by Citrix, VMware, Quest and others to cut storage costs, enhance options and boost desktop performance.

In addition to its headquarters in Mountain View, Atlantis has a research and development center in Bangalore, India.
