Originally announced at this year's Computex PC trade show in Taiwan, the ASUS Eee Pad EP101TC tablet will now reportedly feature Android instead of a customised version of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Compact 7. According to Netbook News, Taiwanese hardware manufacturer ASUS has decided to drop Windows CE in favour of Google's open source mobile operating system – exact reasons for the change were not given.
Netbook News says that the company plans to use the next major release of Android, version 3.0, code named "Gingerbread", which is expected to arrive in mid-October, and that it will wait "for the 3.0 dust to settle". The 12.2mm thick Eee Pad tablet will feature a 10-inch touch screen and weigh just 675 g. Exact hardware specifications have yet to be confirmed, but the device is expected to be powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip and have up to 64 GB of storage.
The ASUS Eee EP101TC tablet will reportedly be on display at next year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and should launch in the first quarter of 2011.
