MOUNT VERNON — A cow was killed by police officers on Friday after it got loose from its farm and ran through town, injuring a police officer and damaging a patrol vehicle in the process.

About 5:40 p.m. July 4, Mount Vernon officers were called to the Wal-Mart area of Freeway Drive to reports of an agitated Angus cow loose in the parking lot, police spokeswoman Shannon Haigh said. The cow apparently got loose from its farm on River Bend Road west of Wal-Mart, outside of city limits.
