Nokia has recently provided new firmware for the Nokia N900 as an update for the Linux based smartphone. The new version, Maemo 5/PR1.2 (specifically V10.2010.19-1) now supports video chat with Skype, SIP or through Google Talk using the XMPP client, and the IM client now supports Facebook chat.

QT4.6, the standard graphics library which features in MeeGo version 1.0, is now included in Maemo (MeeGo being the successor to Maemo, MeeGo version 1.0 was released yesterday). There were also numerous alterations and cosmetic fixes such as an improved user interface for Ovi Maps and the email client, a slightly modified virtual keyboard and a program menu that now shows all programs available without having to click "More...". The internet browser is now able to display web pages in portrait mode and new games for the updated firmware are available from the Ovi store.

In the UK, although the update was offered OTA (over the air), the H's test N900 had to be updated using Nokia's desktop update software. The H's associates in Germany were able to update OTA, but only after referring to the Mameo wiki for guidance on clearing space on the phone's root file system.

Although the Linux-based Maemo operating system is due to be superseded by MeeGo, in a Nokia blog, the company said that there will not be an official update to MeeGo for the N900. This is despite the fact that the N900 is the development and test platform for MeeGo and MeeGo code has been released for the smartphone. The company said it was aware that some users would be disappointed, but said "It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device" and committed to supporting the Maemo software on the N900.
