Using your cell phone or USB modem for Internet service in a foreign country can be _very_ expensive. Here's an alternative.

Xcom Global is an international communications company based in San Diego. They just announced a series of data modem rental plans that work in 21 countries. Xcom Global provides service in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA, and Vietnam. You choose the country where you'll need service, and Xcom Global will provide the appropriate SIM card.

One plan offers a mobile hotspot (e.g., a MiFi) and SIM card for the country you'll be visiting for $18 a day with an unlimited data connection. The hotspot allows up to 5 computers, smart phones or iPod Touch devices to share the connection simultaneously via WiFi. A second plan for $15 gets you a USB modem that works with a single computer. Both work with Skype for video phone calls as well as Internet access.

Sometimes it's cheaper to make arrangements for Internet access through a cell phone company when you arrive in the country you're planning to visit. But it can be a hassle to figure out which carrier's plan is cheapest, making the arrangements, getting the modem to work with your computer, and returning the equipment when you're leaving the country. The Xcom Global gear can be set up in advance, so it's ready to go once you arrive.

As of 2012, XCom Global rental for MiFi wireless hotspot and SIM card for the country you're visiting costs $15 a day, including transit days to and from USA. Insurance costs an additional $4 a day. FedEx delivery and return costs $30. So renting a MiFi with unlimited 3G data service for a 10 day trip would cost ($15 * 10 days) + ($4 * 10 days) + $30 = $220.

For longer trips, XCom Global offers a monthly rental plan. For $249 a month plus $30 a month insurance plus $30 FedEx = $310, you could use the wireless hotspot for a month.

XCom Global sets up the MiFi device to work in a particular country. As of this writing, they offer data service in 174 countries. If you're traveling through several countries, you may have to rent more than one MiFi. There's a plan that covers all of Europe with a single device.
