Goodell expects to talk to union about expanding season soon

Although the head of the players’ union says no one has raised the issue of expanding the regular season with him, that’s apparently about to change.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday at the league meeting (via Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal) that he expects the next round of CBA negotiations to be focused on expanding the regular season.

Goodell has previously indicated that he would support a measure that reduces the preseason from four games to two while expanding the regular season from 16 games to 18.

As PFT has previously reported, a little-reported provision of the CBA already gives the owners the right to expand the regular season to 18 games. That’s not a right that the owners are likely to be willing to give up.
