Not only did the intonarumori/noise machine evoke considerable interest from many of the leading composers of the day, they also influenced the use of noises in films, radio and theatre, as well as the symphonies for factory whistles and sirens organised by the Russian futurists in several cities between 1918 and 1922. Hugh Davies: This recording of the intonarumori/noise machine is believed to be the only one in existence. 00:04:47: Ian Breakwell & Ian Mcqueen: Breakwell’s Circus In November 1978 the artist lan Breakwell created an exhibition called Circus at the Third Eye Centre, Glasgow, inspired by the magical theatre spectacles of Hengler’s Glasgow Circus of the early 20th Century. Ian Breakwell and Ian Mcqueen: a collaborative sound version of Breakwell’s exhibition, Circus. As part of the exhibition Breakwell collaborated with lan McQueen, the Third Eye Composer in residence at that time. McQueen composed a tape reproduced on this cassette using Breakwell’s voice reading his series of sixteen related circus texts, recordings made at live circus performances, the voices of old Glaswegians reminiscing about Hengler’s circus and electronic music. 00:29:37: Ian Mcqueen: An extract from lan McQueen’s music theatre work, lnsight into Night, recorded at the I.C.A. Audio Arts: Volume 17 No 3-4 (1997) The International exhibition (part 2) – documenta X, Sculpture, Projects in Münster 1997 The theme of the International Exhibition explored in Volume 17 Numbers 1 & 2 is continued in this double issue. In Kassel, Marina Abramović discusses, for the first time, Balkan Baroque, her live work realised a couple of weeks earlier at the Venice Biennale. As well as ‘on location’ interviews with artists discussing their works at documenta X and ‘Sculpture, Projects in Münster’, the over-arching issues and themes of each of these major events are also examined. Marjorie Allthorpe-Guyton describes documenta X as ‘being about redundancy and dealing with the end of this kind of event: … from the outside, it’s like looking through a glass window at a laboratory’. Mel Gooding, providing on-the-spot commentaries on a number of sculpture projects in Münster, acknowledges that through their power, impact and meaning the term ‘monumental’ can be used legitimately to indicate authentic attributes of a work of art in public space. In attending major international exhibitions, Audio Arts believes that the unrehearsed and spontaneous interviews, discussion and debates that form an integral and defining part of those events, provide ‘first-hand’ insights into the agendas and preoccupations of contemporary art, criticism and curatorship. Throughout this period there is a concentration of artists, curators, critics and commentators from all over the world. In addition to the unrehearsed, live interviews made during the first three days of the Biennale, Audio Arts in association with Wimbledon School of Art and supported by The British Council also held an international conference in the British Pavilion. Under the Directorship of Harald Szeemann, the 1999 Biennale saw an extension of its locations beyond the Castello Gardens into the historic spaces of the Artiglierie, the Tese and the covered shipyard area of the Gaggiandre. This combination of spaces, including the large docks of the Arsenale and the Corderi, were extended by more than thirty venues to house exhibitions of countries that do not have their own national pavilions. This Biennale was also characterised by the increased representation of Asian artists and Szeemann’s desire for it to be seen as a whole, ‘Aperto overALL’, rather than the previous tradition of separating the young and up-and-coming artists in the Aperto section from the older and more established artists in the National Pavilions. The recorded conversations both on this issue and on the conference tape*, in addition to examining artists’ practice, it interrogated and supported the concept of the Biennale as a model, whilst accepting a growing positive tension between the ‘blockbuster’ National Pavilion displays and the often quieter ‘off-centre’ interventions. The scale and magnetism of the event challenged readings of it as being a ‘charming anachronism’* or merely a ‘trade fair’.** In reality it is a series of exhibitions, interventions and manifestations that contribute an ever changing dynamic of displays, propositions, opportunities and exposures. As well as preparing this double cassette featuring some 35 artists and commentators from 17 countries, Audio Arts in conjunction with Nuova Icona and Wimbledon School of Art held an international round table discussion as part of the Biennale in the first week in June and this is published as a separate book and CD. This is the eighth Venice Biennale attended by Audio Arts in order to make ‘on the spot’ recordings with artists, participants, critics, curators and commentators, thereby communicating the issues, agendas and preoccupations of contemporary art and the debates that surround it. It emerges in the vision of the curators to want to bring the very local and specific aspects of the global situation to Kassel… The thing I miss is the most contemporary, exciting element of art and that is the way artists are starting to make proposals for change, starting to re-capture in a small scale, local, modest way an idea of a utopian proposition. Furlong developed the use of sound as a medium and has himself become synonymous with the use of audio in art. In 1973 William Furlong and Barry Barker established Audio Arts as a cassette-based audio magazine. It provided a dedicated space for artists and art-world professionals to speak about their work in a free and unmediated way. Audio Arts sought to document contemporary artistic activity by recording artists’ voices, generally captured in close proximity to their work. It developed to comprise interviews with artists and curators, commentary by artists on their works, documentation of major international art events, collaborations with artists, sound performances and other sound works. The magazine was in continuous publication for 33 years and ran to 24 volumes, each of four issues, alongside more than 60 supplements. It recognised the potential of the then relatively new audio-cassette technology, which enabled the production of the sound magazine at a low cost and allowed for relatively easy international distribution. Audio Arts arguably represents the most comprehensive and coherently-focused sound archive devoted to art and artists in the world, featuring exclusive contributions from more than 900 individual artists including Joseph Beuys, Ian Breakwell, Tracey Emin and Andy Warhol.
