Delegates at the “state Republican convention in Milwaukee endorsed Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson in the U.S. Senate race with 63.9% of the vote,” the Journal Sentinel reports.

The vote, which came on the second ballot, came shortly after fellow candidate Dick Leinenkugel stunned the convention by announcing that he was dropping out of the race and throwing his support behind Johnson.

Middleton developer Terrence Wall gained 18% of the votes, while 18% voted not to endorse anyone.

The other remaining GOP candidate in the race, Watertown businessman Dave Westlake, did not gain enough votes in the first ballot to qualify for an endorsement vote.

Leinenkugel had launched his U.S. Senate campaign in April to unseat U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, a Democrat.

The primary is September 14.
