Once upon a time, I made a living on the other side of the negotiating table. I worked for creditors, some of whom had me suing people for loans that had interest rates of up to 30%.
Before we could sue them, though, sometimes we had to find them. You’d be surprised at how easy that was. If we didn’t already have their address or employer’s address, we’d head straight to the Internet. I can’t tell you how many times we found what we were looking for on facebook. One time, we even found pictures of a debtor driving a boat we were trying to repossess. Oh, and he had told us he didn’t have the boat. We got that guy into court, and we got the boat.
I’m not writing this to tell you how to avoid debt collectors. Frankly, I believe in confronting them head on, which is what bankruptcy does.
But you should know that if creditors are looking for you, they’re probably looking in places you least expect.
