Bluestone Beta 0.3 for Beta 1.2_02 - Work in Progress!
I probably won't be working on this much. Although it sort of seemed like a cool concept to work on, it appears that Notch may be rewriting the redstone engine to prepare for doing this sort of thing himself, and I've lost interest. It's really not that useful, so this probably won't be updated to 1.3.
What is it? It's another type of redstone for you to use in circuits! The mechanics are exactly the same - hook it up to a redstone torch and it will become powered. This is currently a beta release, just to test out how stable everything is so far. Back up your saves! I can't guarantee that it won't corrupt anything (and the saves won't load without it if you put any bluestone anywhere).
The mechanics between redstone and bluestone are... interesting, to say the least. As it turns out, just a basic implementation produced something close to what I wanted, so for now, I'll go with it until I get a clear picture of what it is that you all want.
Usage
In any given circuit, the redstone (Red] and the bluestone (Water] can be swapped and the effect will be the same. For these diagrams, assume the current source is along the redstone, and the current is flowing from redstone to bluestone. However, if the colours were reversed, it would still work.
When one colour of stone is led directly into the other, it will power it. For example (top view):
(Red] (Red] (Water]
(] (] (Water] (Water]
Be careful NOT to point both colours into each other, or they will power each other indefinitely.
When one leads into a block (Black] then any of the other colour that is adjacent to or underneath this block will be powered. For example (top or side view):
(] (] (Black] (Red] (Red]
(Water] (Water] (Water] (] (]
Again, be careful not to point both colours into the same block.
When one stone is directly above the other, the stone on top will power the stone on the bottom (current flows downward). For example (side view):
(Red] (Red] (Red]
(Black] (Black] (Black]
(] (] (Water] (Water] (Water]
In general, the best way to find out how something works is to try it!
Future Plans
I do intend on adding other colours, and most likely coloured torches. However, there are a few things to address, which I've outlined below. The way it is now is in bold.
-Should the redstone and bluestone interact at all, or should they only be able to connect by using an intermediate - torches, purplestone, etc...?
-Should you be able to make bluestone simply by crafting a redstone, or should you need to combine it with lapis lazuli? I'm leaning towards the second, but for this release I'm leaving it as is to make testing easier.

Licensing
I hereby authorise you to download, use, decompile, modify, and distribute this mod and any variants free of charge. However, if you modify this mod, including updating it to a new version of Minecraft, you MUST release it under the same license as this mod, and you MUST provide the source code if anyone asks for it. If you do not agree to these conditions, then you may not modify or distribute this mod. In the case of a conflict between these terms and the terms to which you agreed when you purchased Minecraft, the latter shall prevail.
TL;DR Do what you want as long as it's within Notch's rules. Provide the source if you modify it.
NAQs: Never Asked Questions
Q: Why did you start with version 0.3? Why not 0.1? A: Because I'd reworked the mod several times before releasing it. Plus 0.3 sounds better.
Sounds cool, should be pretty easy to do, just copy and mod the redstone block type, so it only connects blue wires.
But you should allow them to be connected in some way.
Yup, just passing them through a block-and-torch would let you switch colours. I actually have to do more work than you might expect to make redstone and bluestone only connect to each other (I'm not a fan of the way Notch implemented redstone in the first place, but too many things depend on it for me to change it).

Oddly enough this has already been done. However, i do not think that mod that has already done this is still compatible.
I'd looked for something like this, but couldn't find anything other than the outdated Coloured Torches, and a suggestion from October. Could you provide a link?

Are you actually going to have to harvest the bluestone from blocks like you do with redstone, or will it just be made with redstone dust + blue dye?
I was thinking it'd probably be best to make them interchangeable (put 1 redstone in crafting bench to get 1 bluestone, and vice versa), though I might change that if it seems unbalanced in some way.
How about make Lapis Lazuli chunks function as bluestone? You get shitloads of it.
This was another possibility I was considering, but I decided that I'd rather not edit one of the existing classes. As it turns out, to fix the rendering, I'm going to have to edit one anyway, but hopefully it will be one that won't cause too many conflicts.
Status update: I added bluestone as a clone of redstone, and right off the bat, it did the not-transferring-current-to-redstone thing without me even having to code anything for it. I honestly was not expecting that, so it saved a bit of time. Unfortunately, there are a few little quirks (which I'll explain in detail when I release it), but they aren't all that bad, and in some ways are a better design than I was initially planning on.
However, there's still quite a bit to figure out on the graphics side of things. This is why I'm going to have to edit one of the existing classes - there's code that affects how both redstone and (unfortunately) bluestone are rendered that simply has to change. I mean, I'd like to release it now, but it just doesn't feel right having bluestone that looks like dispensers and flames (I'mnotkidding). Stay tuned tomorrow, I'll probably have it fixed within the next 24 hours. Then you'll get to experiment around with bluestone's little... quirks
weird. I was planning to do this with my Redstone Ingots Mod, I'm still going to do it, but mine may work different then yours :smile.gif:. I guess we think alike. Hope yours goes well
Ever since I became adept at redstone there has been one thing that i have always wanted, Different couloured torches. but i still want them to be powered off redstone wire not just the respective colour.
Although I don't use redstone much, I do think this is a great idea. People could make more complex circuits with this :smile.gif:
I don't think that placing one redstone in the workbench should give you a bluestone though, I think you should have to combine it with Lapis Lazuli dye.

I agree with this!
