Alpena state police trooper charged with evidence tampering, misconduct

ALPENA — State Attorney General Mike Cox has charged a state police sergeant with evidence tampering.
Sgt. Michael S. Oliver, 42, was arraigned Thursday on one count of misconduct in office, a five-year felony, and tempering with evidence, a four-year felony, Cox said.
Oliver, who works out of the Alpena Post, is accused of gaining unauthorized access to evidence secured within the post while on duty in July 2008, Cox said.
The evidence, a computer, was related to an open case that Oliver was not assigned to investigate, he said.
“It is alleged that as a result of Oliver’s contact with the evidence, it was permanently altered,” Cox said.
Alpena County District Judge Theodore O. Johnson set a $10,000 personal recognizance bond for Oliver, who must return to court for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13.
