Duties



 

The Shorelands and Environmental Assistance (SEA) program helps communities manage shorelands and wetlands. Our primary focus is on state and local responsibilities for administering Washington state and federally-delegated laws. Our mission is to work in partnership with communities to support healthy watersheds and promote statewide environmental interests.

The program's Wetlands section is looking for a Senior Wetland Ecologist (Natural Resource Scientist 3) located in Lacey, WA.

This position directly supports the agency's mission for the protection of the land, water and air of the state of Washington by ensuring that implementation of the agency's wetland policies and technical assistance is consistent with emerging scientific advances.  The successful candidate is designated the senior agency expert in wetland science, provide advice to program management and technical staff on critical and complex scientific and technical issues relating to aquatic resources (wetlands, coastal, lakes, streams and rivers) of statewide significance.

Other duties include:
 

  • Informing and educating agency staff, local governments, and the public on the technical and scientific aspects of environmental activities.
  • Develops analytical tools needed to better manage wetlands and other aquatic resources.
  • Provides information on the best available science to be used in protecting the natural and environmental resources in the state.
  • Provides training and support to users of Ecology's technical tools and methods for wetlands.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

A bachelor's degree with major study in a natural science, AND four years of professional research work experience in wetland and aquatic resources sciences.

OR

A master's degree with major study in a natural science AND two years of professional research work experience in wetland and aquatic resources sciences

OR

A PhD in major study in the specialty of wetlands and aquatic resources.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of:  statistical theory and techniques; logic and grammar; basic methods of problem solving; research methods; the body of knowledge in wetlands; agency's purposes; objectives of the wetland management programs and activities.

Ability to:  reason logically; draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; gather and analyze data; participate in conferences and interviews; speak and write effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Status as a certified Professional Wetland Scientist.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
 
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
 
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
