A campaign has been launched calling for an end to the use of force in the hospitalisation and treatment of people with mental illness.

Lobby group Mad Pride Ireland is airing advertisements across a number of radio stations seeking a change in the 2001 Mental Health Act.

The group says the legislation provides for the incarceration and forced treatment of people with mental illness.

The legislation is currently under review and Mad Pride Ireland says it contravenes the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

The organisation says reliance on force to treat mental illness is abusive.

Mad Pride Ireland is also calling on the public to sign an online petition calling for an end to the use of force in the treatment of mental illness.

The petition is running on its website www.madprideireland.ie, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
