After an unprecedented auction last month, India witnessed its first American-style draft on Tuesday. In the process, the under-19 cricketers who recently won the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur were further rewarded with IPL berths and annual salaries of approximately Rs 20 lakh for those who have already played Ranji Trophy and Rs 12 lakh for the rest.

Team Bangalore — who came first in a draw of lots — picked up under-19 captain Virat Kohli out of a group of 16. The next big name in the list of batsmen, Tanmay Srivastava, went to Mohali, while Saurabh Tiwary was picked by Mumbai and Taruwar Kohli by Jaipur. One of the owners of Team Mohali, Ness Wadia, expressed satisfaction after getting Srivastava, describing the young batsman as “one of the striking performers” of the World Cup.

Among the bowlers, Delhi’s Pradeep Sangwan was picked by his city while medium pacers Siddharth Kaul and Ajitesh Argal went to Kolkata and Mohali respectively.

Left-arm spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Iqbal Abdulla, both impressive in Malaysia, were taken by Team Jaipur and Team Kolkata. Tamil Nadu players Napolean Einstein and Abhinav Mukund went to home team Chennai, while Karnataka’s Manish Pandey and Bengal’s Shrivats Goswami went to Mumbai and Bangalore respectively.

Two players from the World Cup-winning team, Perry Goyal from Punjab and D Shivakumar from Andhra Pradesh, were unlucky because Team Hyderabad passed when they were asked to select players.

Festive offer

A surprise addition to the list of under-19 cricketers was Viraj Kadbe, an 18-year-old all-rounder from Vidarbha Cricket Association. An aggressive right-hand middle-order batsman and leg-spinner, Kadbe was a part of the under-19 probables for the World Cup but failed to make it to the squad. He went to Chennai.

Of these players, Goswami, Taruwar Kohli, Argal, Einstein, Pandey and Kadbe have not played Ranji Trophy yet.
