Life 'hell' for mother of disabled victim

The mother of an intellectually disabled boy allegedly sexually assaulted by a school bus driver says day-to-day life has become hell.

The 57-year-old bus driver, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with sexually assaulting two disabled children.

The alleged offences took place between January and August last year in the southern Adelaide suburb of Morphett Vale.

The man is accused of having sexual intercourse with one boy aged under 14. The second charge of gross indecency relates to a girl under 16.

Families and supporters of the two victims protested outside the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Tuesday where the alleged defendant was excused from appearing.

The dozen protesters wore pink shirts reading: "Why do paedophiles have more rights than our kids?"

Defence counsel Stephen Ey told magistrate Koula Kossiavelos he would argue his client had no case to answer.

Ms Kossiavelos continued the bus driver's bail and set down November 8 for him to return to court to answer the charges.

Outside court, the mother of the male victim said the case had taken a huge toll on her family but she was confident justice would be served.

"My son can't talk about it because it's his disability, but he's frustrated, he's withdrawn," she told journalists.

"Day-to-day life has been hell for the last 16 months."

She said evidence laws need to be changed to make it easier for police to prosecute sex offenders who targeted disabled children.

"I am my son's voice, since his disability is his speech, he needs someone to stand up for him," she said.
