101 Great Choir Ideas

by vernsanders on March 17, 2010

Every Wednesday is tip day. Each week’s tip may be about a different topic, but one of the recurring topics will be 101 Great Choir Ideas. Here’s this week’s tip.

  • Conquer a large work (like the Mozart Requiem, or the Rutter Gloria) by starting early, and doing individual movements as weekly anthems. When the whole piece is finally put together, the listeners will have some point of reference, and will be more apt to invite visitors to attend because they know what the music sounds like.

I have done this several times and it really works well! A big sense of accomplishment for the choir which is great too!

Glad this works for you too, Sean. I remember preparing the St. John Passion over a two year period by doing the chorales the first year, and then the choruses the second year. By the time we were ready to do the whole thing. the singers felt like it was a piece of cake!
