Bayern set Luiz Gustavo price at €20m; what are Chelsea waiting for?

Alex Livesey

In a recent poll, the WAGNH crowd voted Luiz Gustavo just fourth among six other options for potential Chelsea midfield reinforcements. But the Daniele De Rossi rumors have died down, the Sami Khedira rumors never really got off the ground, and Ilkay Gündogan was just a pipe dream at best, which makes the anchorman Luiz Gustavo option number one! Science!

With Pep Guardiola determined to mess with success, the Brazilian midfielder - more of a pure holding midfielder than any of Bayern's other options - has been relegated to fourth choice and has yet to play a single minute of preseason or early-season competitive football. Fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have been sniffing around and have seen their €15m bid rejected. The Bavarians are apparently holding out for €20m.

...according to Germany daily the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, the Allianz Arena outfit will take no less than €20m to let go of their highly-rated midfielder.

The primary local source referenced by Inside Futbol also claims that Luiz Gustavo is looking for a slight raise to a yearly gross salary of €7m, which may not necessarily fit into Wolfsburg's schemes. And that is where Chelsea (and Arsenal and Inter Milan) could and should come in.

While Mourinho seems satisfied with the Chelsea midfield as is, I'm not entirely sure that's such a good idea. Especially when the best use of €20m since Claude Makélélé is available and willing. What are we waiting for?
