A disabled man was robbed of his jewellery in a frightening rush-hour burglary this morning.

Three raiders struck shortly before 8.45am at a house in Lemon Close, off Wavertree Road/Picton Road.

They knocked at the 64-year-old's door and when he answered, forced their way in and demanded he hand over several sovereign and signet rings and two gold chains that he was wearing.

The man, who suffers from a long-term medical condition, and his carer, were uninjured but shaken.

The offenders are described as white, aged in their late 20s of early 30s and had their faces covered. One was armed with a kitchen knife and the other with a wooden bat.

After stealing the man's jewellery they also demanded he hand over cash and his watch before fleeing on foot in the direction of Crossfield Road and Botanic Road.

Area patrols were joined by dog patrols and the police helicopter in searching the L7 and L15 area.

Detective Inspector Andy Ephgrave said: "This was a shocking incident in which an older man has been confronted by three highly aggressive men who have burst in and threatened him and his carer. Although no-one was hurt, the victims have been left extremely shaken and upset by what has happened and a significant amount of distinctive jewellery has been taken.

"This is the first day back at work for many people and this happened close to a main road at rush hour. I am sure someone will have seen these three offenders either immediately before or afterwards running away from Lemon Close. I would call on anyone who has seen anything suspcious in Wavertree or Edge Hill this morning to get in contact."
