‘LA Times’ links murders to settlement expansion

This is a remarkable editorial in the LA Times–“The tragedy of an Israeli family’s slaying in the West Bank, and Israel’s response to it, are part of a continuing cycle of violence,” which actually begins with an instance of Israel’s crushing of Palestinian freedom and not the retaliation.

Anyone who follows the news is familiar with how this cycle works. It might begin with a Palestinian child dying while stopped at an Israeli army checkpoint on his way to the hospital. In response, an enraged Palestinian…

You would never see such an editorial in the Washington Post. Years ago I heard Ari Fleischer, former mouthpiece for George W. Bush, brag to a Jewish audience in Cincinnati that he saw it as an achievement that he had never used the words “cycle of violence.” Of course the next step after saying cycle of violence is describing who has the greater power to dispense violence.  LA Times again:

How will building more houses for Israelis in the midst of the West Bank, in settlements that are almost universally acknowledged to violate international law, do anything other than keep the crisis going? Answer: It won’t.
