Police: Nurse shook disabled 3-year-old

A registered nurse watching over a disabled 3-year-old Wonder Lake child has been charged with battery after the child's mother told police the woman cursed at the child while shaking the child's arm, according to police.

Annette M. Freels, 44, of the 4600 block of Spring Grove Road in McHenry, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery on Monday, according to the McHenry County sheriff's office.

Police said Freels was sleeping in the living room of the Wonder Lake residence when she was awakened during the early morning hours Monday by an alarm indicating the 3-year-old needed assistance.

She entered the child's room and cursed at the child while shaking the child's right arm before the mother intervened, according to the sheriff's department.

The child's mother told Freels, who provides in-home health care for the child, to immediately leave, according to police.

Police found her at her residence and following an interview, she was taken into custody and taken to the McHenry County jail.

Freels is due in court Sept. 13.
