Caregiver Charged with Exploiting a Disabled Man

The woman is accused of using his ATM card and checkbook.

Carol Kaprowski, 23, was supposed to be looking after a disabled man, but according to a Pasco County complaint affidavit, she was stealing from him.

Koprowski, of 2140 Melody Drive in Holiday, was taking care of the man --who has Down Syndrome and severe epilepsy -- while his primary caregiver was hospitalized in early October, according to the report.

Between Oct. 12 and 15, while the man was in her care, Koprowski made six ATM withdrawals from his account totaling $440. She also had the man sign five checks that she cashed at several Publix stores, according to the report.

Koprowski was given access to the ATM card for emergencies, the report states. She did not have permission to use the checks, according to the report.

Surveillance video from two Publix stores shows Koprowski writing the checks and placing the money she received in her pocket, the report states.

Surveillance photos from the bank where the six withdrawals occurred also show Koprowski completing the transactions, according to the report.

A total of about $820 was taken from the man's account, according to the report.

Koprowski is charged with exploitation of a disabled adult. She remains at the Land O'Lakes jail on $2,500 bond.
