After nearly losing his life to negligent nursing care, a Vietnam veteran filed a whistleblower lawsuit that exposed a $61 million Medicaid scam, CNN.com reports.

Richard West, a 63-year-old veteran who suffers from muscular dystrophy, went after Maxim Healthcare Services when he realized he was paying for services he wasn’t getting.

“They were getting paid for eight hours and I was just getting sicker and sicker and they did nothing,” West told the news network.

After a six-year criminal investigation, West’s lawyer uncovered that Maxim was altering time sheets in order to bill clients for time that nurses weren't working. The company agreed to a $150 million settlement.

“The company takes full responsibility and has established a new infrastructure,” Maxim Healthcare Services’ new CEO told the network.
