NJ man who beat up double-amputee and stole wheelchair sentenced to 3 years

CAPE MAY COUNTY — A 56-year-old man who beat up a double-amputee and stole his wheelchair has been sentenced to three years in state prison, according to a report on CapeMayHerald.com.

Joseph L. Devine was convicted of aggravated assault and theft for the Feb. 21, 2013 attack, the report said.

The victim was at a bus stop on Rio Grande Avenue in Middle Township just after midnight when police say he got into an altercation with Devine. Besides taking the wheelchair, Devine made off with cash and a checkbook.

Devine was drunk at the time of the incident, the Herald reported. He is eligible to be released on parole on Dec. 31, according to state Department of Corrections records.
