It’s Bowling Green Food Week! Today The Events Will Take Place at Community Action Head Start. This Week Is Sponsored by Barren River Food System Alliance.

Community Farmers Market will partner with the Barren River District Health Department, WKU Office of Sustainability and Community Farm Alliance to host Food Week 2014. The mobile farmers market will be distributing fresh food and educational materials to Community Action, HOTEL INC, WKU, Dishman McGinnis Elementary and the monthly Barren River Food System Alliance meeting at Cambridge Market at 10:00 pm.

There will be two mobile market sites open to the public. Here is a list of the weeks events!

  • Monday October 20th-Community Action starting at 9:00 am
    1.  Education health service building
    200 east 4th street. 140 students
    2.  Resource and development center
    171 center street.  100 students
    3.  Little Scholars
    901 Browntock. 50 students
    Kids will tour mobile market picking out a fresh food item and educational material.
  • Tuesday October 21st-HOTEL INC  at 10:00 am
    Clients of HOTEL will be invited to tour mobile market, receive educational materials, receive information on SNAP and double dollars at CFM. The mobile market will pilot delivery of fresh food to the food pantry on this day.
  • Wednesday October 22nd-WKU at 10-1
    Fresh food will be available for purchase to students and faculty with double dollars being offered for big red bucks.  WKU will be sourcing local tomatoes from ATP greenhouses thanks to connections being made by Christian Ryan from the WKU office of sustainability.
  • Thursday October 23rd-BG City School Dishman Mcginess (100% free lunch school) involving 435 students 69 teachers and staff.
    Community Farmers will partner with Kim Simpson with the Bowling City schools to use a Federal Fruit & Vegetable grant to allow students to shop the mobile market for fresh food that can be taken home.
  • Friday October 24th-Cambridge Market. 10:00 am
    The Barren River Food System Alliance will host a special monthly meeting to highlight successes in local and/or fresh food over the past year.  Cambridge will be sourcing local food for the lunch menu and participants are encouraged to purchase lunch.

Join us on Friday October 24th at Cambridge Market for a celebration of local food. We will host our monthly Barren River Food System Alliance meeting as well as a launch of the food system assessments that will help us create a better local food system. A local lunch will be offered at Cambridge market so please come prepared to support a local, independently owned restaurant by buying lunch!

Get active and help support the local food system anyway you can. One way is with Community Farmers Market. Community Farmers Market is a year-round market featuring over 50 vendors with a variety of local foods and handcrafted items. The Market also regularly offers cooking demonstrations, folk school classes and live music. Hours are Saturdays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and Tuesdays from 2-6 p.m. It is located at 2319 Nashville Road next to the WKU Store.
