TRENTON – Trenton police Sgt. Ivan Mendez, who was suspended without pay after an internal affairs investigation, resigned today effective March 2, his attorney Robin Lord said.

Mendez, who was accused of harassing two superior officers, did not admit any wrongdoing by turning in his badge, Lord said.

"Sgt. Mendez's decision to resign is in no way related to fear of prosecution," she said. "He maintains his innocence and did nothing wrong."

Mendez, who was suspended without pay on Feb. 15, could not afford to be out of work while the case was adjudicated, Lord said.

“It was a personal decision based based on family and financial matters,” Lord said.

Trenton police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Medina said the resignation had been received.

“After consultation with Sgt. Mednez’s legal counsel and review of the possibility of Sgt. Mendez facing criminal and or administrative charges, Sgt. Mendez elected to submit a letter of resignation which would take effect March 2,” Medina said.
