Allentown woman allegedly leaves special needs child unattended in vehicle while shopping in Hellertown

The caretaker of a special needs child is being charged with leaving the youngster unattended in her vehicle while she shopped in Hellertown, according to borough police.

Authorities say they were called at 10 a.m. Nov. 20 after someone reported seeing a child left alone for several minutes in a vehicle parked at the Spring Hill Shopping Center, 19 Main St.

By the time police arrived, authorities say the female caretaker had left. Borough police say an investigation led them to Carol D. Sorrentino, 47, of the 700 block of South Carldon Street in Allentown. Sorrentino, police say, left the special needs child alone for 10 to 15 minutes while she was inside a store.

Authorities did not indicate Sorrentino's relationship with the child except to say she was a caretaker.

Sorrentino was arraigned Nov. 26 before District Judge David Tidd on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. She was released in lieu of $10,000 unsecured bail.

A phone number listed for Sorrentino was disconnected.
