About this ebook

Meeting a dog’s physical, mental, and emotional needs during a period of limited mobility can help reduce the possibility of future behaviour problems, alleviate some of the stress of caring for a less active canine, and help aid recovery.

Encouraging owners to reflect upon, and take into account, their dog’s individual requirements in advance of surgery or other lifestyle-limiting event, the book also contains information and advice about appropriate activities that owners can introduce to their dog’s daily routine whilst walks are limited.

About the author

Sian Ryan has an MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour and many years experience as a dog trainer and behaviour counsellor. She worked as a behaviour counsellor in the Behaviour Clinic at the University of Lincoln, and as a researcher in dog behaviour and emotions. She has her own training and education centre, Developing Dogs, where she runs classes, workshops and seminars for dog owners and trainers. She has fostered dogs for several rescue organisations, including a 12-week old sighthound puppy, who had been abandoned at a vets with a badly broken leg. This puppy – typically high energy and in need of exercise and socialisation – required 9 months of care and rehabilitation, and was the catalyst for writing this book.

Helen Zulch, a veterinarian who qualified in South Africa, worked in a number of areas of veterinary science before focusing on animal behaviour. She has consulted and lectured in the area for over 10 years and holds European Specialist status in the field. She moved to the University of Lincoln, UK, to continue her career, and her main interests and areas of research include: the prevention of behaviour problems through appropriate early life experiences, the application of scientific principles in animal training, the interaction between health and behaviour, communication in animals, and olfaction in dogs. She has owned and trained dogs all her adult life. Helen is currently programme leader of the MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour at the University of Lincoln.
