Bye in Portuguese
Bye in Portuguese is “tchau", and it’s pronounced just like the Italian “ciao". Brazilians however have enormous vocabularies and Brazilian Portuguese is a language that is constantly and rapidly evolving, becoming ever more colorful.
Brazilian Portuguese contains a myriad of nuances and variations for saying goodbye, depending on context, social status and the speaker’s mood. Tchau is just one word that can be used to say bye in Portuguese. There are many other ways to despedir-se de alguém – to say bye in Portuguese, for example:
- Até logo – see you soon.
- Até mais – see you later.
- Beijo(s) – kisses. Super common when saying bye in Portuguese.
- Um abraço – “a hug”
- Vou nessa - used for saying “I’m leaving” or “I have to go.”
