Manslaughter charges were filed after a McAlester man was killed after being hit by a car while riding his wheelchair on Carl Albert Parkway Friday night, officials say.
McAlester Police Det. Kevin Hearod said Harvey Lee Crapo, 68, riding in his motorized chair, died after he was he was allegedly hit by a car driven by Keaton Lozano, of McAlester.
On Monday Lozano, 18, of McAlester was charged in Pittsburg County District Court with first-degree manslaughter and possession of marijuana in connection with the death of Lozano.
According to a police affidavit filed at Pittsburg County Court Clerk’s office, Lozano was driving a red 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse about 10 p.m. when he allegdly struck Crapo at 1314 E. Carl Albert Parkway.
After the accident police allegedly found Lozano walking out of the Sinclair store at 1400 Carl Albert Parkway, the affidavit states.
Lozano’s vehicle was parked in front of the store with its airbags deployed and with front-end damage, according to the affidavit.
Police reported that an officer asked Lozano if he was involved in the accident. Lozano asked what he hit, according to the affidavit filed in the case.
After Lozano was told that he hit a man in a wheelchair, he “got upset,” the affidavit states. Lozano “seemed in shock from the accident, knowing he had hit someone,” the affidavit states.
Officers allegedly found marijuana in Lozano’s pockets and he allegedly tested at 0.12 blood alcohol level, according to the affidavit.
Lozano was charged with one felony count of first- degree manslaughter and one misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
If convicted he faces no less than four years in prison and fines of up to $1,000.
Lozano is set to appear in court on Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. for a preliminary hearing conference. He is being held in the Pittsburg County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
