Washed-up tsunami dock draws more than 10,000 visitors

The 132-ton dock, tsunami debris that washed ashore Agate Beach last week, has attracted droves of visitors. Now, state officials have a count.

Chris Havel, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation, said the agency counted 11,000 cars at Agate Beach's paved parking lot from Wednesday through Sunday. No daily counts were available, but Havel said that in comparison, around the beach gets 400 cars on a typical Saturday.

Visitors still have a chance to see the 66-feet long dock as park officials take bids from companies for the removal or destruction of the dock. Havel said the department is looking at the costs and methods of removal being proposed. He said officials would like to find a company that has "experience, is capable and offers a realistic plan."

The bidding will close on Wednesday.
