A 43-year-old Halifax man is facing charges after he allegedly stole money from a woman who is legally blind.

Police say the incident happened at Pete’s Frootique on Dresden Row around 6:40 p.m. on May 1.

The woman was shopping, and while she was busy looking at items, police say a man approached her shopping cart and stole her purse.

The purse was later found inside a garbage can on the street but a significant amount of money was gone.

Police say the man targeted the blind woman.

“He entered the store following her, and then went straight to her, took the purse, and then left the store without taking anything else,” said Halifax police spokesperson Const. Pierre Bourdages.

On May 6, police released photos of the suspect taken from video surveillance. They say they received several tips from the public after releasing the photos.

The man was arrested at his Morris Street home Monday morning.  He is facing charges of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of probation.

He was released from custody and is due to appear in court on June 30.
