Style over Fashion: London to Lagos

One of my favourite things about living in London is the constant exposure to varied personal style. I prescribe to the belief that style should be valued over fashion. To that end, I am featuring a friend and fellow blogger, MayK (http://this-is-mayk.co.uk).

1. How would you describe your personal style?
I’ve coined my personal style, ‘effortless chic.’ I’m quite minimalist and like to wear outfits which look pulled together without looking like I spent the whole day putting it together. I’m also big on comfort and living in a hot country means I have to think practically about what to wear.

2. Who are your favorite designers?
My favourite designers at the moment are Victoria Beckham, Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen. They epitomise that feminine, minimalist and sexy look. I can’t afford their clothes just yet, lol but they inspire my personal style in that I lean towards clothes that are of their style when I shop on the high street.

3. What is your take on trends?
I’ve never been a big fan of following trends. Trends come and go, and I think they have the effect of giving you a dated look. Remember when western boots were the in thing? It came and went again. However, trends that are more general, like OTK Boots I’m willing to try. Being a slave to trends is never synonymous with personal style.

4. Do you have a favorite accessory?
I love shoes! A great pair of shoes can lift any outfit. I also love how wearing heels makes you walk like a lady.

5. Why did you start your blog?
I’m a very visual person so I’m always buying magazines in order to see beautiful clothes and gain inspiration. Everything’s going digital so I decided to create my blog as an online magazine, showcasing the beautiful people and outfits I come across. My blog also serves as another avenue for style inspiration.

In terms of fashion blogging in Nigeria, I hope to create an online space which brings a more classic and refined sense of fashion to what is a still developing sector.

I am a huge fan of http://this-is-mayk.co.uk!

6. Who are your favourite Nigerian designers?
There are so many Nigerian designers that I like. The likes of Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, Iconic Invanity and young label Clan make clothes that appeal to me. The attention to detail and tailoring is spot on.

7. What advice would you give to someone trying to establish their own personal style?
Stay true to who you are. Don’t try and forge an image of what you think is right because people will always see through it. When you wear the clothes you like, in the way you like, you’re instantly going to feel more confident and there’s nothing more attractive than a confident woman.
