ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Advocates for people with autism are praising a proposal by the governor to make autism treatment available to more Georgians. Governor Nathan Deal included 2.4 million dollars to expand the state employee health insurance plan to start covering autism care.

Many parents with autistic children end up paying 30-thousand dollars or more a year for behavioral healthcare services.

A specialist who works with children who have autism in Albany says it's great news for many families.

"I think it would be a welcomed relief for many families, I know that it would just be starting with state employees, but that's a good start because there has been a fight for this mandate for years now,"

The proposal must be approved by the General Assembly.
