The number of children with disabilities in Moscow has been increasing by one thousand every year, a social care chief said on Tuesday.

“There are currently 28,700 disabled children in the city,” Tatyana Potyayeva, the deputy head of the city government’s social care department, told reporters.

Potyayeva cited Moscow’s deteriorating ecological situation as one of the chief reasons for the increase.

There are more than 13 million people living with disabilities in Russia, according to the country’s federal statistical agency Rosstat.
