Man in wheelchair robbed, assaulted while at ATM in downtown Topeka
Incident occurred about 4 a.m. Thursday outside Capitol Federal branch
A man in a wheelchair was robbed before dawn on Thursday morning shortly after he withdrew cash from an automated teller machine at a bank just south of downtown Topeka.
Topeka police Lt. Colleen Stuart said the robbery occurred at 4:15 a.m. outside the Capitol Federal branch at 1201 S.W. Topeka Blvd.
Stuart said the victim had just retrieved money from the ATM when a suspect “jumped” him and took his money.
The assailant then took off on foot from the scene. Topeka police ran a K-9 trail but couldn’t track down the robber.
The victim suffered what originally was described as a cut during the incident, but police said the wound turned out to be superficial and was more like a scratch.
There was no report of the victim being transported to a local hospital.
