Toronto Police have arrested and charged a man they say impersonated a special needs assistant at several Toronto schools.

Police say the man claimed to be a certified teacher and worked as a special needs assistant and educational assistant at H. A. Halbert Junior Public School, Ionview Public School, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, Inglewood Heights Junior Public School, and Centennial Road Junior Public School.

The man was at the schools between April 1 and June 5 of this year and according to police, he was never employed by the Toronto District School Board.

Police did not say how it was eventually discovered that the man had not been an employee of the school.

TDSB Spokesperson Ryan Bird said the man allegedly impersonated a specific casual employee at the schools. As soon as the school board learned of the alleged offence, Bird said Toronto Police were notified.

"It in not a case of an average person coming in off the street," Bird told CP24.com Thursday.

"This person would need to have very specific information."

Bird said he doesn't believe this has ever happened before in any TDSB schools.

"What we are trying to stress, it is really an isolated incident."

The man has been charged with five counts of Personation to Gain Advantage.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East, on Sept. 9.

Police believe there may be more schools involved and anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
