PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A convicted felon is charged in federal court unlawful possession of a firearm after 30 guns were stolen from a residence in Gresham, according to court documents.
John Jeffrey Shelton has a criminal record that includes convictions for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree kidnapping, unlawful use of a firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He is being held in the Multnomah County Detention Center.
According to a federal complaint, on April 21, federal agents with the ATF learned that about 30 firearms had been stolen from a residence in Gresham.
Shelton was identified as the suspect in the burglary. Detectives learned of Shelton using a confidential source, according to court documents.
Shelton is accused of showing the informant a number of photos that showed guns Shelton was trying to sell, records show. The photos were shown to the victim of the burglary who confirmed that the guns looked similar to the ones that were taken, records show.
On April 27, agents attempted to stop Shelton in the area of Southeast 41st and Southeast Division Street, but he fled inside a vehicle, record show. He was eventually stopped a couple of blocks away and taken into custody. Investigators found a firearm inside the vehicle that they say Shelton was driving.
Shelton appeared in U.S. District Court earlier this week. He is being held in custody as a flight risk. His next court date is scheduled for May 25.
