Bodies of Two Boaters Recovered in SE Waters

Two out-of-state fishing lodge visitors died Sunday when their small boat capsized in Sumner Strait, about 25 miles south of Petersburg, the Coast Guard said.
Troopers identified the boaters as Jonathan Comfort, 45, of Clayton, Delaware, and Kenneth Rupprecht, 58, of Tamassee, South Carolina.
A spokesman said the Coast Guard got a call at 5:40 p.m. from Petersburg police, who said they had received a cellphone call from the men. The men said their boat, an 18-foot Lund, had swamped and overturned near Level Islands, and they had been in the water about 45 minutes, the Coast Guard said. They were wearing lifejackets but not survival suits.
Coast Guard Air Station Sitka launched a rescue helicopter and Alaska State Troopers from Wrangell and Petersburg took vessels to help in the search. Lt. Simon Greene, co-pilot on the search helicopter, said troopers found the overturned skiff and a cooler around 10 p.m. in Douglas Bay, about 100 miles southeast of Sitka, and directed the helicopter to the area.
The helicopter crew located the men in the water about 20 yards and 40 yards offshore of an island, and a half-mile to a mile apart. Troopers recovered the bodies.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
