Questions Surround US Route 1 Development

When Patch broke news last week that the State Highway Administration identified , the comments section blew up with questions.

Patch will be looking more into the plans so that you, the residents, the shoppers, the students, the commuters of College Park know what to expect. We have questions of our own, but we assume there's more out there.

What are your most pressing questions regarding the U.S. Route 1 redevelopment?

One issue we can resolve now is why the $8.8 million is focused on engineering and design of U.S. Route 1 between Campus Drive and Route 193. The answer is that the overall redevelopment plan does not focus solely on this segment of U.S. Route 1 - just this part of the funding. This is the first phase, and the rest of the artery will also be developed.

"We had agreed with the State Highway Administration to construct the road in three phases," City Director of Planning Terry Schum told Patch upon the announcement of available funds.

expressed a need for changes at the Cherry Hill Road and U.S. Route 1 intersection, north of the segment included in Phase One. That intersection is included in the third phase of the plan.

"That’s a really costly segment," County Councilman Eric Olson (Dist. 3) told Patch upon the announcement.
