Patel, 54, a resident of Lavari village in Sabarkantha district, duped 15 other handicapped persons by offering financial help and wheelchair through a trust and vanished after collecting processing fee of Rs3,500 from each of them.

In his complaint to Karanj police on March 23, one Kelvin Haripara, a resident of Lai village of Upleta in Rajkot, alleged that he along with 15 other handicapped people of his village was duped by one Pravin Patel. However, after his arrest on Thursday, Karanj police learnt that his real name is Babu Patel, not Pravin Patel. He is handicapped in both legs.  Haripara, met Patel in a hospital of Surendranangar a month ago, where Patel offered financial help to him through an Ahmedabad-based Manav Sewa Trust.

Patel told Haripara that the trust is distributing financial aid of Rs1.80 lakh as well as a wheelchair to all the handicapped people. As a processing fee to get the aid, Patel allegedly collected Rs3,500 from each of them and told them to wait for him at the same spot. However, Patel vanished with Rs4,8000 and cheated his fellow handicapped persons. Karanj police have been tracing Patel’s mobile number.
