MPs from all sides unite as mission to save lives of cyclists moves up a gear

MPs launch a cross-party inquiry today aimed at getting more people to cycle in Britain and to ensure that cycling is safe.

The launch comes as friends and colleagues of the Times reporter Mary Bowers mark the first anniversary of her injury in collision with a lorry on her cycle to work. The accident inspired the Cities Fit for Cycling campaign.

A total of 3,192 people were killed or seriously injured on UK roads while riding a bicycle last year. Today The Times is stepping up its cycle safety campaign. We are e-mailing all 36,000 people who made written pledges of support with a short questionnaire to assess which safety measures they think would be most effective.
