A concept-album masterpiece. An exploration into the dark nights when you think that the best of your life is behind you and you don't even care if you wake up the next morning. Peggy Lee's vocals are exquisite, projecting a tone of "I've been there; I've done that, I'm through with it; as a matter of fact, I'm just through with life." Peggy Lee takes on the persona of someone who was once perhaps a great cabaret performer, but became addicted to alcohol or some drug, yet still tried to continue her career. She actually acts out the melancholia of the songs. If they gave out Oscars for records, she should have won for best actress.
Despite that depressing description, this is a wonderful CD. Get it!.
