    A concept-album masterpiece. An exploration into the dark nights when you think that the best of your life is behind you and you don't even care if you wake up the next morning. Peggy Lee's vocals are exquisite, projecting a tone of "I've been there; I've done that, I'm through with it; as a matter of fact, I'm just through with life." Peggy Lee takes on the persona of someone who was once perhaps a great cabaret performer, but became addicted to alcohol or some drug, yet still tried to continue her career.She actually acts out the melancholia of the songs.If they gave out Oscars for records, she should have won for best actress.

    Despite that depressing description, this is a wonderful CD. Get it!.

    What do you think you’d get if you put a premier rock n’roll songwriting partnership together with a doyenne of smoky jazz standards and film soundtracks? Never in a million years would you be expecting this... Unusual enough today, it must have been jaw-dropping on its release in 1975. Six years earlier, the tragicomic hit ‘Is That All There Is?’ (which opens this edition) had raised some eyebrows; but a whole album of Weimar-infused existential angst from the writers of ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and the singer of ‘Fever’? You must be joking! But this is superbly subversive, enchanting and unsettling by turns, both with its lyrical themes of murder, madness, despair and longing, and its strange musical shifts from easy listening to surreal polytonal harmonies that might owe as much to Schoenberg as to Weill. Miss Peggy Lee turns out to be a perfect conduit for these uneasy dreams - Lotte Lenya meets Dory Previn. Exquisite arrangements by Johnny Mandel set off these mysterious jewels beautifully. If you’re broad minded enough to take your pleasure where you find it, however unexpected, this weird, subliminal masterpiece could be for you.

    Always been a minor fan of later Peggy Lee songs and absolutely loved Is That All There Is song . I did not realise she had released this cd by Leiber /Stoller until general reading about two months ago . Bought the cd through Amazon really just to see what it was like given the song writers pedigrees. I wish I’d found it years ago. Its great, its different ,its innovative ,its challenging ,its variable in content and in style but that’s what makes it so listenable over 30 years later . Not to overstate it but Its like a mini Sgt Pepper or a mini Pet Sounds . Its just so different , a bit inconsistent hence four stars but boy is it a favourite “new” cd for me. Ron

    but I had come across the cassette tape years ago and have wanted the CD because it really is the rarest of her works to find. I have tried to stream one or two of the tracks on Pandora but no luck. The cassette I still have and have something to play it on but I worry the day something happens and I know longer can depend on it. Very collectible find with all, one of a kind songs and arrangements.
