Qwest Struggling To Sell Long Haul Network
Probably won't get over $2 billion, say analysts...
In April, rumors surfaced that Qwest was trying to sell off their long-haul fiber network, which connects long distance calls to other carriers. Qwest was apparently hoping to net about $2-3 billion from the deal -- and use it to pay down the company's $14 billion in debt. However, the efforts aren't going particularly well. Earlier this month, Cogent Communications CEO Dave Schaeffer pulled his company out of the running, saying the asking price was too steep. Reuters notes that AT&T and Verizon would only get involved if they could pick up the network at bargain basement prices. Level3 is expected to bid, but analysts don't see the assets picking up more than $2 billion.

Let's see....

Television Provided by DirecTV
Cell Phones Provided by Verizon
WiFi Provided by AT&T
I'd Pick on their Internet and say Provided by MSN... (long shot though)

And.. it just leaves them with crappy, over static, unreliable, over priced voice service that no one really wants any more.

Hrmmmm... I wonder where that leaves the big Q...

Qwest is actually still the ISP. When you look at the modem's login info & password, it has a qwest.net login name

Funny how you're often the first to criticise people who either generalize or exaggerate.

Any proof that "no one really" wants voice through Qwest?
Any proof that qwest's voice is static and unreliable? Or are you doing the same thing you blast others for doing by talking like your experience speaks for all others?

Re: Adios

Um... Yea... my proof is the bleed of customers that Qwest is experiencing being the largest land line loss of all the major providers, for one. Is that enough for you?

Second, it's a WELL documented fact, over years, that Qwest, formerly US WEST, of having THE WORST reliable service and THE WORST in call quality of all land line providers.

I'm guessing you're not a Qwest customer, are you!?

Ever had a provider take 8 months to get you a single land line? Ever had a provider lie through their teeth with static at the dmarc and tell you there's nothing wrong? Ever had your service go down for a week or two at a time with no resolution?

When you live in major cities like Minneapolis/St. Paul, Denver, Seattle, Phoenix, you'd not expect to have service like you lived in a remote back woods area where Party lines are the norm.

I don't base this off my own experiences, which have been INCREDIBLY awful, but off of actual data, complaints, and PUC records..

So, I"m sorry to disappoint you, mr anon, by my statement was vague or generalized one bit.

Google will guide you the rest of the way...

That's still far short of "no one really", a claim you made, and is simply the same type of generalization and exaggeration that you blast others for.

Guess again. Another incorrect assumption on your part.

Sounds like a personal experience, you know, the type that when others share you blast them because they don't represent the majority?

Re: Adios

US West/Qwest has plenty of documented history of outrageous service issues..

Like I said.. Google it.. enjoy your research.. and really.. knock it off, you're not cute.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_West

Criticisms of U S WEST

Despite the rapid growth and waves of technology, U S WEST began to capture the ire of many customers and even some of the states in which they operated.

U S WEST, in several complaints that landed the company in court, was accused of failing to meet service needs within a reasonable time frame and of practicing predatory billing and collection methods. While the company often claimed that subscriber demands were often greater than their ability to fulfill orders, many critics pointed to high profit margins, spending on bring-to-market technology and lackluster investment in customer support. Critics also accused the company of monopoly-like practices. The charge of monopoly practices was considered quite serious, since the US Courts had specifically broken up the AT&T/Bell operating companies in order to eliminate or minimize such monopolistic effects.

The company was fined multiple times by the State of Oregon for these practices during the 1990s. U S WEST was also, at several times, involved in smaller litigation with other states within its service area for similar complaints from customers.

In business-to-business matters, U S WEST also had a rather sullied reputation shortly before its demise. Namely, Qwest, MCI and smaller CLECs who had recently been allowed to offer local service within U S WEST's service area (as a result of the Telecommunications Act of 1996) complained to the FCC that U S WEST was uncooperative in releasing their formerly owned lines to these new companies. These types of complaints landed U S WEST in court yet again and offered the complex question of whether or not the government could legally offer the sale of owned property to other companies in the event of deregulation.

Re: Adios

Fact is, you claimed that "no one really" wants qwest's phone. I asked for evidence to support your claim and you avoid it. You freqently blast users for exaggerating and assuming their experience represents the majority Then you make complaints about your own service as some sort of proof that it represents the majority or backs your exaggerated claims. If everyone had these issues qwest would not be around. Period. You state reports that not only don't state "no one really" wants qwest's phone, but reports about service issues that nearly all probably have.

Let's also remember qwest has one of the worst territories compared to other telcos. That doesn't help their business or upgrade path.

Let's see those "facts" that show how "most" people don't want POTS. fiberguy always states people on this website aren't comprised of most people.

Most people do not know what POTS is or even care that it is used. All they want is a phone that has a tone, dials a number, and a person picks up on the other end.

for example, my mother thinks IE, Firefox, and Yahoo IM is all email. She says I need to check my email and if she has trouble I have to look at what she is doing to know what she is doing. if I ask her if she cared that POTS was being used she would respond with what the fuck is POTs...If I ask her what she thought of VOIP, she would respond what the fuck is VOIP. My mother is the average techie American. she could care less about how something works or what is being used to get it to work. all she expects is that the damn thing works (her words).

You still have not provided any facts, just personal claims. Where are the facts to support your exaggerated claims and your personal experience that you're passing off as representing the majority? You know, the same thing you blast others for doing on this site?!

You made a claim, I asked for the report.

Very true. How the hell can you terrorize the roads when your home phone won't reach out to your car and the cordless maybe has a range of 2 blocks?

Yea. I could be wrong but this doesn't look good for quest. Bankruptcy where are you? How did they manage to get a $14 billion debt anyway? That's a gigantic amount.

If Q does sell the long haul fiber

what are the chances they will speed up roll outs of copper to the home in smaller markets? Slimmer?

Re: If Q does sell the long haul fiber

Copper is freakin' dead. Been for quite awhile now.

Their best bet is FTTP (or FTTH) now. Why keep using outdated technology over and over again?

"Sure, we'll lay out brand new copper pairs." Hell with that, I want a new fiber.
