#FFF Fake Fangirl Friday: San Diego Comic-Con Day One Schedule! Sexy, Geeky Feedback

San Diego Comic-Con’s schedule for Thursday, July 21, came out yesterday. Friday’s schedule comes out today. Here’s are a few reactions (below the panel description) to the Action Flick Chick and friends’ “Oh, You Sexy Geek!” panel.

10:45-11:45 Oh, You Sexy Geek!— Does displaying the sexiness of fangirls benefit or demean them? When geek girls show off, are they liberating themselves or pandering to men? Do some “fake fangirls” blend sex appeal with nerdiness just to appeal to the growing geek/nerd market, or is that question itself unfair? And what’s up with all the Slave Leias? Action Flick Chick Katrina Hill (ActionFlickChick.com) asks Bonnie Burton (Grrl.com), Adrianne Curry (America’s Next Top Model), Clare Grant (Team Unicorn, “G33k & G4m3r Girls”), Kiala Kazebee (Nerdist.com), Clare Kramer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Nerdy Bird Jill Pantozzi (“Has Boobs, Reads Comics”), Jennifer K. Stuller (Ink-Stained Amazons, GeekGirlCon) and Chris Gore (G4TV’s Attack of the Show!) to discuss whether fans can be sexy and geeky at the same time — and if they should! Room 6A

by Fangirl (@FangirlCantina): “No one with real geek credentials can deny that female characters in scifi and fantasy have been objectified at times to cater to male fans, and it merits holding a magnifying glass up to make sure fans and creative parties aren’t crossing a line into demeaning women. The other dynamic, which some don’t seem to realize, is…”

by Jennifer Guzman: “…I get the uncomfortable shifty feeling of wanting to tell them they don’t have to do that. I want to be clear that I don’t blame or judge the young women for doing this; I blame geek culture — so much of it tells women they’re only of value if they’re of sexual value. (Hell, let’s strike “geek” and say culture in general, but it is particularly marked in comics, I think.)”

by Drew Grant (@videodrew): “Definitely catch: “Oh, You Sexy Geek!”…I’d say that you could just watch the mashup of hot chicks on late-night shows and save yourself the effort, but since these are actual nerd girls discussing gender issues and not just Mila Kunis talking about World of Warcraft, it’s worth making time for.”

Re: The Hollywood Reporter’s “This discussion should last exactly three seconds.”

katiedoyle: Has @HeatVisionBlog been on the internet the last 6 months?
WillTurc: 3 seconds is too long to discuss Heatvision bl… Oh, they didn’t mean for you to discuss their blog. Haha! Funny joke.
TheNerdyBird: @ActionChick. Can’t believe @HeatVisionBlog thinks our SDCC panel will only last 3 seconds. Are they on the internet? http://bit.ly/n0yupd
GeekWingNet: @TheNerdyBird @ActionChick Pretty sure it’s one of the many prevalent “bait” posts that cause anger, linkage, then ad views. #DontFallForIt
monkeyjedi: @TheNerdyBird People on /cgl/ on 4Chan talking about trolling your panel. I’m sure they’re just talking shit, but just FYI.
geekyjessica: UGH RT @TheNerdyBird: @ActionChick. @HeatVisionBlog thinks our SDCC panel will only last 3 secs R they on the internet? http://bit.ly/n0yupd
Dalanna23: @ActionChick I shall avenge you and your panelists by unleashing hordes of the undead on the villain!
geekyjessica: @thegeekery Right? You’d think they’d have someone who at least talks to geeks report on #SDCC@TheNerdyBird @ActionChick @HeatVisionBlog
WillTurc: I think the #SDCC panel “Oh, You Sexy Geek” is going to be very good. I won’t be there and I hope to see many tweets. @ActionChick
thegeekery: @geekyjessica @TheNerdyBird @ActionChick @HeatVisionBlog Wow, that is insulting. Way to follow current controversy Hollywood Reporter
Kez_Darksun: @geekyjessica @TheNerdyBird @ActionChick @HeatVisionBlog He shouldn’t be judging the panel by how long he could last ‘discussing’ the issue.
tishalulle1: @heatvisionblog oh whatever.
elmoTK: @TheNerdyBird @ActionChick @HeatVisionBlog Invite him to the panel. If last 3+ seconds, he buys everyone a round.
kristenmchugh22: @TheNerdyBird @ActionChick I think @HeatVisionBlog should come to the panel, rather than dismissing and mis-characterizing it.
csdaley: @geekyjessica @thenerdybird @actionchick to be fair I think he might have been talking
HumerusOnline: Geez, I can’t imagine WHY there’d be a line for the Sexy Geek Girl Panel @TheNerdyBird @NerdRage42 @bonniegrrl @ubereditors @actionchick
GeekyGeekyWays: @geekyjessica @TheNerdyBird @ActionChick @HeatVisionBlog Not to mention the discussion on how to make more things in comicshops pink! #Irony
NerdRage42: @HumerusOnline @TheNerdyBird @bonniegrrl @ubereditors @actionchick 😛 Oh you…

Let’s see. What are people outside @ActionChick’s followers tweeting about it since that schedule came out?

theonetruebix: In order to even think about getting into Ringer, it might be Oh, You Sexy Geek! and then directly to Ballroom 20. #SDCC Oh, You Sexy Geek! to Ringer to Awake is what might be happening for me. Still looking at what’d come next. #SDCC
theonetruebix: There are already 216 people who have marked Oh, You Sexy Geek! for attendance on the #SDCC @Sched. http://t.co/CH8SL4X
gregalor: Wow, there’s a panel about sexy geek girls and whether they’re posers and/or pandering to men. Hard-hitting.
ubereditors: Can’t wait to see you ladies at Oh, You Sexy Geek! http://t.co/973kFWn @bonniegrrl @TheNerdyBird #LXLSDCC
mistermuggles: intensely side-eyeing the “sexy geek” panel at comic-con, but at least there seem to be two female-oriented panels that AREN’T about looks
piratesmiles: @mistermuggles Way delayed, but that Sexy Geek panel would be better if it had different panelists. I hate Adrianne Curry.
sarah_sprague: There are at least four people in my time line complaining about the ComicCon “Sexy Geek” panel. The rest are people who don’t go to ComicCon
toomuchpete: @sarah_sprague I hope the complaints are that the geeks aren’t sexy enough because their knees are too pointy.
devincf: Comic Con Thursday programming gets off to an early irritating start with ‘Oh You Sexy Geek’ at 10:45! Narcissism ahoy!
