WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio -- An 18-year-old foster child is a suspect in the stabbing death early this morning of a Cuyahoga County social worker who lives in this Lake County community.

Police said the 13-year-old daughter of Lisa Knoefel, 41, called 9-1-1 at 1:16 a.m. screaming that her sister had a knife and was attacking her mother in their Chagrin Drive home.

Police said they found an 18-year old foster child covered with blood and holding a knife.  Knoefel was in a first-floor bedroom with multiple stab wounds, police said.

The 18-year-old is in police custody.

"We learned this morning our colleague, Lisa Knoefel, was murdered at her home," Patricia Rideout, director of the Cuyahoga Department of Children and Family Services, told her staff in an email.

Knoefel was a sex-abuse social worker who started with the Cuyahoga agency in 2000.

"Lisa's commitment to children led her not only to us, as a dedicated member of the DCFS family, but also to become a foster parent," Rideout's statement said. "Her heart and home were opened to a child who needed her."
